Geek: Can it happen?

Untraceable

Myra and I were bored and decided to watch “UNTRACEABLE“. I’ll admit the movie was suspensful - I wasn’t really interested in knowing how/why the killer was the way he was but more into if the whole concept of not being able to block a URL would be possible. Technically the whole premise of this movie was the more hits a site got, the faster the victim was tortured. The whole movie was about how Feds were trying to find this killer, which I would agree with, but if you take away the site’s whole premise - theoretically no one dies. So my first thought would be to kill access to the site.

First thing I thought was “DNS Poisoning“, which is simply when a hacker injects an exploit on a vulnerable DNS server but in this case it would be intentional. All ISP’s would basically take the record of the domain, www.killwithme.com, and point it to a non-routable ip address - which would result in a blank page. Me being the geek I am, the first thing I did after the movie was grab my laptop and do some searching on whether or not this would be possible. And lo and behold, the first article I see agreed with my solution about poisioning.

That’s pretty much it, no one would be able to access the site, and the death counter would be stuck at 0, the killer would get bored waiting and let the victim go haha.

I’d give the movie a 3 for suspense, and maybe a 7 for authenticity.

Watch it if you and your lady-friend are bored….
